Cabochons – Subtle Elegance, Polished and Ready to Set

A cabochon is a precious or semi-precious gemstone with a polished domed surface. Rather than sparkle like a diamond or faceted gem, the rounded cut enhances color, reflection, or translucence over a domed surface. Our cabochons for sale never stay in stock for long because our buyers know they’re receiving high-quality, well-cut pieces with stunning colors and patterns in a variety of shapes and dimensions.

Did You Know? The word “cabochon” derives from the French word “caboche,” meaning “small dome.” Cabochons have been a staple in lapidary projects and jewelry design since ancient times. For example, Egyptians, Mesopotamians, and Greeks used the technique to adorn jewelry, masks, sculptures, and ceremonial objects, as they believed certain gemstones held magical and protective powers.

Unlike faceted gemstones, cabochons emphasize color, pattern, and texture without relying on light reflection. This cutting style works best on opaque and translucent stones, as it brings out details like banding in agates, chatoyancy in tiger’s eye, or the deep glow of turquoise and jade. Several other materials can be made “en cabochon,” except diamonds.

From vibrant agates to radiant opals and bold turquoise, each cabochon in our collection has exceptional quality and unique character.
