Physical properties of rhodochrosite:
• Color: The most in-demand rhodochrosites range from pure pale pink to deep cherry/rose-red, though many specimens include white or cream banding and minimal black webbing
• Luster: Vitreous to pearly, giving it a soft, glowing finish
• Transparency: Translucent to semi-translucent
• Hardness: Mohs 3.5–4
• Cleavage: Perfect in three directions
• Crystal Structure: Typically forms in rhombohedral crystals or massive formations
Rhodochrosite gets its vivid pink color from its manganese content. The banded varieties, also called “ribbon rhodochrosite,” are particularly desirable for their natural brushstrokes of rose and cream. High-quality specimens from Argentina’s Capillitas Mine and Colorado’s Sweet Home Mine draw enthusiasts worldwide with their romantic color palettes and crystal clarity.
Rhodochrosite is a versatile material. Rare-gem artisans (a.k.a. jewelers skilled in rare gemstone settings) can craft them it into one-of-a-kind pendants, earrings, and cabochons. Its softness requires careful handling, meaning it’s ideal for statement pieces rather than everyday jewelry. Some of our customers are also collectors who fell in love with rhodochrosite at first sight, choosing to display raw specimens or polished slabs in their homes or workplaces.
Interesting facts: Also called the “Inca Rose,” Rhodochrosite is Argentina’s national gemstone. It’s believed to have metaphysical properties, symbolizing love, compassion, joy, and emotional healing.
Gallery TCR’s meticulous selection of rhodochrosite for sale includes rough and polished slabs for collectors, faceted cabochons for jewelry makers, and decorative pieces with swirling ribbons of pink-red and white.
