Arizona Wulfenite – Finest in the World

Wulfenite’s glassy surface forms naturally, as if it was polished straight from the ground. High-quality specimens with fiercely sharp, transparent crystals are in constant demand among collectors and mineral enthusiasts seeking the best of the best, and Gallery TCR has them.

This mineral emerges in the oxidation zones of lead ore deposits. Arizona is home to the world’s most sought-after wulfenite, with mines like Red Cloud and Defiance producing crystals with deep, fiery hues. Mexico and Namibia also yield exceptional specimens, with each location producing distinct variations in color and formation.

Wulfenite Properties:

• Color: Ranges from deep red and orange to bright yellow, depending on impurities
• Luster: Adamantine to resinous, giving it a natural glossy finish that sparkles when light strikes the surface
• Transparency: Transparent to translucent, with some specimens showing excellent clarity
• Hardness: Mohs 2.5–3, delicate and best suited for display
• Cleavage: Perfect cleavage along its (001) crystal planes, meaning artisans can split wulfenite into thin, square sheets if cleaved along these planes.
• Density: 6.5–7.0 g/cm³, heavy due to its lead content
• Chemical Composition: Lead molybdate

Trivia: Wulfenite is Arizona’s official state mineral under A.R.S. § 41-860.04, following the efforts of University of Arizona mineralogist Alexander Schauss. The designation recognizes the state’s exceptional wulfenite deposits, which geologists consider the best in the world.
